  • You can always swim in Lake Monona HOWEVER….Swimming after 9-10am gets risky with increased boat traffic so we highly recommend you swim in the morning. Please swim w/ a safety buoy for visibility to boaters

    There are NO WAKE buoys in front of the Monona Terrace that we recommend you stay within for saftey and visibility concerns

  • During the PEAK summer months of July and August you will find the water temperatures in the 80-83 degrees

    Temperatures in Madison can carry and swing. It could be in the 80s, it could rain all day, it could be upper 50s

  • No, your time starts when you cross the timing mats. If you dont complete the swim, bike, or run in the allotted times per sport, you will be disqualified and receive a “NO TIME”

  • The swim is TWO LOOPs that is clockwise

  • Transition 1 at IMWI is long. The average T1 is over 10 minutes as you run up a helix full of fans into the Monona Terrace for your T1 bag.

  • Yes, both transitions are inside the Monona Terrace in two different Ballrooms. They are very easy to navigate

  • Think of splitting the race into 1st half and second half. You dont need to put all your nutrition for the entire 112 miles at the start.

    Put the 1st 56 miles of bottles and nutrition and in your special needs bag at the 56 mile mark, switch out the bottles and nutrition.

    In the 2nd 56 miles, try using different flavors to avoid taste fatigue

  • The bike course is known for its hard, short steep uphills. It has over 5,000ft of elevation gain and most climbs are 30 seconds to 3 minutes.

    1) The first bad downhill is going down Garfoot Rd, you carry high speed into a right turn into a left turn

    2) The second difficult downhill is when you fly down Timber LN at a high speed into a SHARP left hand turn

  • You want to ride the bike you are most comfortable riding, its 112 Miles!

    The best and fastest options will be a TT bike with a good, comfortable bike fit

    The second best option is a road bike with clip on aero bars

  • If you plan to finish at night time…

    1) please pack a jacket or long sleeve for your RUN SPECIAL NEEDS as it can get cold

    2) please pack a headlight as it can get dark in many sections

  • All athletes will have 17 hours to complete the entire race once they cross the starting mat at swim start. Anyone who does not complete the event in 17 hours will be designated as DID NOT FINISH (DNF) in the official results. Aid station stops, transitions, etc., will be included in your total elapsed time. Splits will be recorded for each segment of the race. The following cut-off times apply for each segment of the race:

    SWIM CUT-OFF The swim course will close 2 hours and 20 minutes after the last athlete enters the water via the rolling start. Each athlete will have 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete the 2.4-mile swim. Athletes who take longer than 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete the swim will receive a DNF. IRONMAN officials reserve the right to pull athletes off the course who exceed any established course time cut-offs.

    BIKE CUT-OFF The bike course will close 10 hours and 30 minutes after the last athlete enters the water. Each athlete will have 10 hours and 30 minutes to complete the swim, T1 and the bike course regardless of when they start the swim. Athletes who take longer than 10 hours and 30 minutes to complete the swim, T1 and the bike course will receive a DNF. THERE IS ONE INTERMEDIATE CUT-OFF ON THE BIKE COURSE: • At the start of the second loop at Old PB and Whalen Rd at 2:10 PM. Any athlete who does not reach this location by this time will not be permitted to continue. The final bike course cut-off will be at the dismount line 10 hours and 30 minutes after the last athlete enters the water.

    RUN CUT-OFF The run course will close 17 hours after the last athlete enters the water. Each athlete will have 17 hours to complete the entire race. Athletes that take longer than 17 hours to complete the entire race will receive a DNF. THERE ARE TWO INTERMEDIATE CUT-OFFS ON THE RUN COURSE: • At the turn-around on Martin Luther King Jr Blvd at 9:25 PM. • At the turn-around on State St at Gilman at 11:05 PM.
